Kumar Purnima: Moon Worship, Rituals & Why It Matters in Odisha
In the heart of Odisha, under the silver glow of a full moon, Kumar Purnima weaves magic — a celebration of youth, hope, devotion, and the divine. For guests at Ashok Nandini Guest House, this festival is more than cultural lore — it’s a chance to live tradition, breathe history, and feel the pulse of Odisha’s heartland.
What is Kumar Purnima?
Kumar Purnima, also known as Sharad Purnima in broader Hindu context, is observed on the full-moon day of the Ashwin month (Sept–Oct) in the Odia calendar.
In Odisha, it is one of the “13 festivals in 12 months” (Baramasa re Tera Parba) that link spiritual life and nature.
The festival is dedicated to Kumar (Karttikeya / Moon / youth), and also marks the start of Gajalaxmi Puja across many parts of Odisha.
Significance & Symbolism:
Young women observe fasts and pray to the moon god (Chandra Deva) and Goddess Lakshmi for blessings — especially to find an ideal life partner.
The rising “Udila Janha” (freshly born moon on the horizon) is considered auspicious — those who view it early are believed to be blessed with a young, vibrant husband.
The moonlight is thought to carry purity, and offerings under it like Chanda Chakata (puffed rice, jaggery, fruits) are presented as devotion.
It also marks the transition from Ashwin to Kartika month, which is a holy month in Odisha, and the beginning of the 11-day Gajalaxmi Puja in many regions.
Rituals & Celebrations:
Morning Rituals: Anjuli / Offerings:
Girls wake up before dawn, bathe, wear new traditional clothes (often bright hues), apply flowers, jewelry, and offer “Anjuli” (a handful of grains/fruits) to the rising sun near a Tulasi plant— 7 times.
They use a kula — a woven basket — filled with seven items: coconut, banana, apple, cucumber, jaggery, sugarcane, betel nut, etc.
Evening Rituals: Moon Worship & Chanda Chakata
At dusk or moonrise, worshippers offer the Chanda Chakata plate to the moon, often in a half-moon shape, decorated with flowers, diyas, incense, and chanting songs.
After worship, the fast is broken; the offerings are shared as prasad. Young women sing traditional Kumar Purnima songs, and play Puchi (a hopping game) or other folk games in moonlight.
Community Celebrations & Temple Events:
In towns like Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal, Kendrapara, mandaps and public gatherings are set up for collective worship, music, dance, and festive decor.
The ambiance is rich with lamps, rangoli, community feasts, and traditional Odisha hospitality.
